Book Making
an open book, reading in the sun, i squint
Once in a while, when I have time I enjoy making books. Idea books, journals, drawing books, puzzle books, or whatever comes to mind. I have found Bookbinding for Artists by Keith A. Smith (ISBN-13: 978-0963768254) to be a very helpful reference.
Here are a few examples:
- Falling Leaves: a Zen Reader
This book combines two things I like to do make stuff and write haiku. I have taken words from 13 poems and written them on individual leaves. The idea is that you take all the leaves and throw them up in the air, let them fall where they may, and read the results. You may create one of my poems, but then again you may not.
- children laughing hard
the falling leaves of autumn
throwing them in the air
- The Book of Verbs
This is a puzzle book pairing words and hand colored etchings together in unique combinations. It is a very small book--only 2in x 2in when closed.
- Not Necessarily: Many Questions Remain Unanswered
This is an accordion style book with ink drawings and mixed media text. I found interesting sentences or phrases and used them to build the text. The text from the first page reads:
- I should like to enjoy life
While I was walking under a cloudless inky sky
lights were beginning to come on.
- My Idea Book
This book is a small blank sketch book. I have filled it with poems, drawings, sketched and scribbled ideas--some good, others not so much.
- The Unfinished Book
Another accordion style book with mixed media collages. This book is currently unfinished and may never be finished. You can read it here.
